The Regina Public Library Presents...

This week I've been watching the facilitators patiently installing a piece by Romanian artist, Bogdan Achimescu. Thousands of garlands, made of square sheets of paper, each carrying drawings of faces, hang above the main area in the Central Library. The effect is like hanging white sheets, or sails, or the Sydney Opera house. It softens the harsh florescent lights, and brings the ceiling lower, for a softer intimate feel. Although the thousands of faces seem exhaustive to the viewers, Bogdan finds repetition and monotony liberating. More often than not there are two faces on each little sheet of paper, representing two halves of one original being. An asexual person who has been split into two personaes. He draws the left person with his left hand, and the right with his right. Bogdan is one of the three artists speaking on Saturday, July 18th at two in the Dunlop. Bogdan and Dan are both from Romania, and have been having a good time drving to various sites in-town in their rental car.

The Regina Public Library Presents...

This week at the Dunlop Art Gallery we've been installing the upcoming show, "Diabolique". Normally, we would keep the windows covered (and the public gaze out...) but this time around, we've left the windows open so that patrons can watch Fawad Khan work. The New-York based, Lybian born, Pakistan raised young artist is doing a large wall-painting at the back of the gallery. It's a scene reminiscent of a car-bomb, but victimless and flamless. Instead, flashes of color, light, and the occaisional screw punctuate the retro-american car. Encased in camo, the vehicle is american, bringing the car-bombs home, instead of leaving the violence crypticaly distant in the middle east. Fawad will be one of three artist's giving talks on Saturday, July the 18th, beginning at two. On a strictly personal note, he is charming, well-spoken, and eager to make interesting conversation. I urge everyone to take advantage of this opportunity, and join us for this exciting event.

This week at the Regina Public Library we have been closely watching Dan Perjovschi's progress as he covers the glass face of our building with his poignant, signature political cartoons. If you are downtown in Regina, this is a sight you won't want to miss. Using a scissor-lift, he has been hard at work for the last few days. His drawings are satirical, hilarious, sombre, and haunting. He will be giving an artist's talk, along with a few others from the show, on Saturday July the 18th, here at the Dunlop. Please join us, it's an incredible opportunity, and we are honoured to have him with us.

Diabolique at the Dunlop

I wanted to share with you all that there will be a fantastic art opening at the Dunlop this summer for their next show "Diabolique". It's an exhibition centered around the idea of war. A big topic to cover, with a big piece by Douglas Coupland! The opening reception will be at 7:30 at the Dunlop on July 17th, 2009. Please come! It'll be thought provoking, and there is sure to be a lot of good discussion. Hope to see you there.

Summer at the Dunlop!

Well, it's happened. I'm back in Regina! (Although not quite forever, yet.) I'm working as the collections clerk at the Dunlop Art Gallery for the summer. For those of you who are unsure, it's in the central library downtown. In between working full time, planning a wedding, and catching up with friends and summer, I hope to be working hard on my own stuff. I've been working on a couple comic books with friends, doing some knitting, and soon I'll set up a silk-screening table! I will be at the University of Regina this fall and winter semesters, here for one more summer, and then hopefully be back in Calgary for one more year. But... you never know, the rent situ is so insane in Regina we might end up buying a house, we'll see. Anyhow, I'll be posting all the rad summer projects I've been doing soon enough, but first I have to do them...

Spring Show N Sale!

It's that time of year! When all of us poor art students  gather up all the things we've made over the year and put our blood-sweat-and-tears into, and try and sell it all for chump change! That's right, it's the annual ACAD show and sale. 

I myself have lots of things to offer, prints of naked men, and women and robots, silkscreened shirts, pillows, and hand knit vegetable themed coin-purses. (Cos who doesn't want to keep all their dimes in a radish?) So come on down to the show and sale this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and toss your hard-earned disposable income at an art student or two. (Since ARTIST= STARVING and STUDENT= STARVING, so ART STUDENT= STARVING STARVING.) It'll be the best for both of us. And if you can't make it, I can always let you have dibs on the left overs.

The "You Are Here- Film and Video Cooperative" has it's first showing at-- you guessed it-- the Canmore Community Cooperative Workshop. Tentatively booked for the ninth of January, I will update you all as soon as I can. In the mean-time, the lot of us have some work to do...

Gallery Show!

Just letting you all know, I've got a gallery show opening on November 28th at the Canmore Community Cooperative Workshop. It'll be a wine and cheese type event, starting at seven p.m. The Showing will be very 'cooperative' indeed, with lots of different local artists, the headliners being myself and Jenn Shea. Birth!

This week marks the first official meeting of the "You Are Here Film and Video Cooperative". Hooray! A star-studded cast of not-yet-finalized friends of mine, who already have a pretty impressive portfolio among them. The hope is to turn out a few more films, (I have at least five more to go for classes before X-mas.) and have a couple of shows near Beginning of January. You'll see us soon!

Well, it looks like I missed the dead-line for this year's GIRAF fest. That particular animation has also been put on hiatus, considering I now have an animation class. (and many other classes, too.) Here's a little sample of what I'm working on now;

Bye-Bye COOP...

    Here I am, at the reception desk on my very last day at the Canmore Community Cooperative Workshop. It has been a fantastic summer, and if circumstances provide, I will certainly be back next summer. I will definitely be visiting during the year, and keeping in contact with everyone. There is even talk of a cooperative Still Life Class, guided remotely by my correspondence. My art-work will be displayed at the COOP in my absence, and I will post upon it's official un-veiling. Please, all you fellow artists abroad, consider the COOP as a beautiful opportunity for a mini art-retreat in the mountains. You beginners, consider the COOP a wonderful place to meet with people of all skills and skill levels to 'cooperate' together. You musicians, this is home to a thriving group of musicians, a great open-mic night, and a unique venue to share your trade. Everybody else, the COOP is exactly what you want to make it, it's a ready-made community waiting for your input, and your vision, and your own personal brilliance. Trust me, this is the beginning of something beautiful, and I was honored to be a part of it.

Right now I am working on a new animation, "honey, honey (you are here.)" An estimated 3 minutes long at completion, and at 8 frames per second, we're looking at a daunting 1440 frames. Here's a short clip of my first few seconds that have been completed. I hope to be finished in time for the GIRAF4 animation festival in September.

The Coop is OPEN!

Happy news! The COOP is finally open! At the Coop we have a wood-shop with an area for bicycle repair, a pottery studio and kiln, a wet-bar and fancy new coffee machine, a common area with wood burning stove, a presentation room/visual arts room, and a big beautiful deck. Our deck and upstairs all have a beautiful 360 degree view of the rocky mountains. Classes will begin this week, so check out the events calendar on the web-site or send me an e-mail. We have a facebook group with photos of the facility and events, so that's a good way of getting in contact, too. 

A full year's membership is only $5, which gets you a discount on all user fees (e.g. woodshop drop-in fees, or monthly art-studio fees.) and the right to vote at the AGM. We would love to hear from you, and hope to see you soon!

Classes at the COOP!

Hullo!

Starting this week I will be starting my classes at the COOP. This Thursday starts the Adult Figure Drawing, which is a four week course on each Thursday. On Friday I'm starting the Comic Book Class, which will be every Friday for four weeks. Then starting Saturday the 9th, I have a Still Life class, which will be for three weeks, on each Saturday and Monday. Public Opening at The Workshop

      I'm just extending a public welcome to, well, you! The Public! The Coop will be officially opening it's doors on July 26th, with an opening Art Show (featuring my own works.) and reception. Canmore Coop- Artist In Residence

This summer, I will be the artist in residence at the Canmore Community Coop. The Coop is currently under construction, but will have it's grand opening in July.
